KPI Spotlight: cRPO — The Metric That Re-Rated Okta on 11% Growth (October 03, 2026)
Here’s the uncomfortable math from today’s tape. Okta grew revenue 11%. Its stock tripled. It now trades at roughly 50x forward earnings — a multiple reserved, until about six months ago, for companies growing twice that fast.
The market did not pay for revenue. It paid for two numbers underneath it: 14% cRPO growth and 30% of bookings coming from new products. One of those is a mix metric. The other — current remaining performance obligation — is the single most under-instrumented KPI in private SaaS, and it is now the number public markets are using to decide whether your growth is real or decaying.
Private rounds reprice on public logic within one to two quarters. Which means if you are raising in Q1 2027, cRPO is about to be on your diligence list whether your finance stack can compute it or not.
What cRPO Actually Measures
Remaining Performance Obligation is the total contracted revenue you have not yet recognized. It’s deferred revenue plus backlog — everything a customer has legally committed to pay you but hasn’t been invoiced for or earned by you yet.
cRPO is the slice of that expected to convert to revenue in the next 12 months. Non-current RPO is everything beyond.
The formula
- RPO = Deferred Revenue (billed, unearned) + Backlog (contracted, unbilled)
- cRPO = the portion of RPO scheduled to be recognized within 12 months
- cRPO growth = YoY change in cRPO, reported in percent
This is an ASC 606 disclosure, not a vanity metric. It is auditable, comparable across companies, and — critically — forward-looking in a way ARR is not.
cRPO vs. ARR vs. bookings: why operators confuse all three
ARR annualizes your current run-rate. It tells you what’s happening now. It also quietly flatters you: a customer on month 11 of a 12-month contract with no renewal intent is still 100% in your ARR.
Bookings tell you what sales closed this quarter — lumpy, non-GAAP, and defined differently at every company you’ll ever benchmark against.
cRPO tells you what is contractually locked for the next four quarters. It is the closest thing SaaS has to a forward revenue guarantee. When cRPO growth exceeds revenue growth, you are accelerating and the P&L hasn’t caught up. When cRPO growth falls below revenue growth, the reported number is a trailing indicator of a business that already turned.
ARR is a photograph. cRPO is a weather forecast. In 2026, investors stopped paying for photographs.
Why October 2026 Made cRPO the Pricing Metric
Three things converged this year.
First, the growth premium collapsed. The “SaaSpocalypse” repricing of 2025 punished topline growth that wasn’t durable. Investors got burned by companies posting 25% revenue growth on 12-month contracts with 85% gross retention — the growth was real for exactly one year.
Second, AI roadmap risk became underwriteable. OpenAI shipping GPT-6 “Astra” today and framing it against its own charter’s AGI language means every product built on GPT-5-class cost assumptions is re-baselining COGS this quarter. If your moat is a model wrapper, your gross margin forecast is now an opinion. In that environment, contracted revenue is worth more than probable revenue. cRPO is the contracted number.
Third, multi-year deals came back. Enterprise buyers facing AI vendor volatility — see the Pentagon designating Anthropic a supply-chain risk and killing a $200M contract over model-control terms, not price — want term certainty. Longer contracts inflate total RPO and, when structured with ramped commitments, pull cRPO up too.
Okta’s 14% cRPO against 11% revenue is a +300bps spread. That spread is the entire re-rating thesis. The market read it as: revenue growth is the floor, not the ceiling.
cRPO Benchmarks: What Good Looks Like in 2026
Use the spread, not the absolute number. Absolute cRPO growth is contaminated by contract duration mix and billing terms. The spread between cRPO growth and revenue growth is the signal.
